Our client is a leading UK-based financial services group, providing a wide range of banking and financial services in the UK and overseas, principally through its branches and wholly owned subsidiaries.
Our brief was to find and attract a Strategy Director for the wholesale banking business who would to influence the strategic direction and manage the design and support of a strategic plan for the division.
The ideal candidate would have a classic 'Big Four' strategy consulting background coupled with exceptional knowledge of wholesale banking issues. This experience was not common as the financial services practices within the target businesses were small, with many having left to join client-side businesses in recent years. There had been a general downturn in the consulting market, financial services had been heavily hit and there was considerable change in the consulting infrastructure. High profile moves were seen as high risk.
Despite these challenges, a shortlist was delivered within 4 weeks and ultimately two individuals were successfully appointed, both of whom had met the criteria of bringing a wealth of experience in classic financial services strategy consulting. One of the successful candidates is now Head of International Business within wholesale banking business for this client.
